Dr. Gregory MagelDr. Greg Magel is Executive Advisor at Cartagena Capital. Greg Magel is a well-known technologist and advisor in the photonics and optical networking industries. An independent technical and intellectual property (IP) consultant, he provides design and product development services and has long experience in patent strategy, and patent portfolio analysis and development. As a founding partner of TIPRA, an international advisory firm, he leverages a global network of experienced technology executives and domain experts to help businesses make better and faster strategic and investment decisions that involve technology issues. An internationally-recognized and well-published authority on optics and MEMS (microsystems/MST), he has provided technical consulting in the form of R&D, design and project management, training, and advice for both Fortune 500 and small and growing technology-based companies. He is particularly well-connected to high-level executives in the worlds of telecommunications, photonics, semiconductor technology, and nanotechnology.

Dr. Magel has led research and development activities at Texas Instruments, Corning, and an optical networking equipment startup, as well as consulting for a number of companies. These technical activities have encompassed the areas of photonic devices and packaging, fiber optics and planar waveguides, lasers and nonlinear optics, optical CDMA networks, analog microwave photonics, image sensing and display. In addition to publishing over 20 papers in technical journals as a research scientist, he is an active inventor with over 19 issued and pending U.S. patents. Besides new technology and product development, he has performed technical and IP due diligence in M&A transactions, worked on licensing of patent portfolios, acted as a liaison between C-level officers and patent counsel, written patent applications, and performed prior art searches. He has been active in professional societies: a Senior Member of the IEEE, he is serving as a representative of the IEEE Lasers & Electro-Optics Society to the IEEE Nanotechnology Council, and in the Optical Society of America, he served in the past as Chairman of the Photonics Division of the Technical Council, and before that, as Chairman of the Integrated Optics and Micro-Optics Technical Group. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.S.E.E. from Rice University.

Dr. Magel is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a Patent Agent.
